General Facts

Scofield has been an industry leader for over 30 years in the technique of thinning timber on valuable and sensitive property, including land that has environmental, aesthetic, monetary or sentimental value.

Scofield is a full-service timber company that harvests annually one million to two million individually selected trees on 30,000 acres in Georgia within a 70-county area.

Scofield harvests trees to obtain the best possible outcome for the land and the landowner.

Using specialized equipment, Scofield extracts profits from wooded tracts without destroying the natural beauty of the tract.

Scofield enhances the beauty and marketability of land through selective thinning by handpicking each tree for removal. In most cases, the remaining forest benefits from the culling process.

Landowner Services

Scofield helps landowners reap maximum value from the harvest of their trees, whether they are clearing land for development, thinning trees to enhance land value, or investing in property for growth and profit.

For landowners who want to sell their timber, Scofield manages and controls every aspect of the timber sale directly: price, tree selection, road construction, permitting, landowner liability protection, clean up, and erosion control. When necessary, Scofield negotiates issues with adjoining landowners.

Developer Services

Scofield works with developers to give them an alternative to clear-cutting the land for building that will produce a bountiful crop of timber and leave the land more aesthetically pleasing than it was previously.

The American Homebuilders’ Association has stated that the number one environmental attribute prospective homeowners list when discussing their needs is, “more trees.” Similar comments have been made by recreation-seekers, such as golfers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Scofield helps developers achieve the aesthetic needs of the land they are developing.

The BridgeMill golf course and subdivision development is a prime example of how Scofield works with developers to achieve maximum use of the land while maintaining its natural beauty.

The needs of the large-scale developer are different from other landowners, and Scofield recognizes that fact. Developers of forested sites of 500 acres or more have special concerns. Whether the intended use of a large-scale site is a golf course, a residential community, or a progressive, mixed-use office development in a park-like setting, its developers place a very high importance on the value of aesthetics.

If you are developing in a situation where beautiful surroundings and attention to environmental details will be selling points for you or your customers, you should choose your timber company very carefully.

A Dedication to Excellence

At Scofield, we can help you achieve two important objectives when clearing begins. First and foremost, we develop a plan for selectively clearing and thinning that will preserve the beauty of the setting. Second, we help ensure favorable publicity for your project, not only through the sensitivity we use during the thinning, but also by the professional, attractive manner in which we perform auxiliary activities, such as road building and debris chipping.

A Scofield thinning will leave your property looking better than before we began, and you will enjoy the revenues generated from the timber sale. Scofield has specialized equipment designed precisely to improve site aesthetics. We also have award-winning forestry professionals whose main goal is to preserve natural beauty, not destroy it. Each major job is assigned to a Scofield forester who manages all aspects of that operation.

Furthermore, the wood chips we create from debris and then spread around your site will make it even more attractive to potential customers, the media, or anyone else who visits the project. Finally, you may discover, as have many of our larger clients, that Scofield’s record of accomplishment and credentials can become a useful marketing tool for your job.

Partners in Progress

Developer Brett Blevins (left) and Scofield President Jay Bear on hole #4 at BridgeMill, a 1650-acre golf course development in Cherokee County.

Scofield has formed many successful partnerships with large-scale developers during the past three decades. We work closely with you and your team, offering competitive pricing for the timber, enhanced aesthetics for the property, and sensitivity to the specific needs of the project. As an added bonus, Scofield can help you develop a progressive, long-term plan for forested, undeveloped portions of the site. With large-scale projects, it is almost inevitable that they will mature in stages.

Why clear the entire area and then fend off negative public sentiment for the duration of the development, when you can allow us to thin selectively as the project proceeds and even set up a long-term timber management program if it is warranted? The American Homebuilders’ Association has stated that the number one environmental attribute prospective homeowners list when discussing their needs is “more trees.”

Similar comments have been made by recreation-seekers, such as golfers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Scofield can help you achieve this goal and still ensure you a handsome profit from the timber that is harvested. If your site calls for environmental and aesthetic sensitivity, your site calls for Scofield.

Weyerhaeuser Cites Scofield for “Raising the Bar”
on Timbering Standards

Atlanta, Ga. – Weyerhaeuser Company has presented Scofield Timber Company with its Highest Quality Supplier of the Year award for excellence in timber harvesting. At a special awards banquet in Perry, Georgia, Weyerhaeuser bestowed Scofield with its prestigious “golden axe” mounted on a wood plaque. Scofield won the award for achieving and maintaining the highest possible standards in timber harvesting.

“Scofield has raised the bar to a new level of timber harvesting,” said Dale Williams, Weyerhaeuser area manager. “Scofield is the leading company in virtually every category.” Olin Hicks, northwest Georgia area manager for Weyerhaeuser, said he has the highest regard for Scofield’s field operations and the company’s personnel. “If someone at Scofield makes a commitment, as far as I’m concerned, it is already taken to the bank.” Scofield won the annual award as a result of its consistently high scores in each element of the environmental section of Safety Quality Utilization Environmental (SQUE), Weyerhaeuser’s rigorous third party auditing program. Weyerhaeuser also considers how well timber company candidates adhere to its business management practices. Weyerhaeuser selected Scofield from 12 timbering company candidates.

Jay Bear, Scofield president, said Scofield places a strong emphasis on its business relationships. “We place the utmost importance on our relationships with our clients, our logging crews and with each other. Everything we do is to further each of these relationships and to make them fruitful and profitable for everyone. It takes a special team to do this. I am very proud of our logging crews and the Scofield foresters and office staff for the integrity, ethics and timbering excellence they have demonstrated.”

Weyerhaeuser has long been the industry leader in assuring that its field operations maintain the highest standards possible. The company’s special audit teams observe and monitor logging crews as often as 100 times per year. They check for safety violations, traffic records, environmental impact, aesthetics of the harvest, and the quality of the logs and pulpwood that are delivered to the mills.

The timber industry in recent years has worked to improve its public image through great efforts to upgrade all aspects of timber harvesting operations in aesthetics, safety and environmental impact.

In 2001, Scofield was the recipient of Weyerhaeuser’s prestigious Environmental Award. Scofield also won the award for its leadership and respect for the environment. In addition, Scofield received recognition from the Nature Conservancy for protecting and maintaining the integrity of the environment during timber harvesting. Scofield is the only timber company that has ever been officially recognized by the DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation District for “dedicated service in the conservation effort.”

Since 1974, Scofield has been an industry leader in timber harvesting in the Atlanta metro area. The company harvests more than one million individually selected trees on nearly 20,000 acres annually. Scofield specializes in leaving land in the best possible condition after the harvesting of trees.

Weyerhaeuser is an international forest products company that employees 47,000 people in 17 countries and had a total of $16 billion in sales in 2000. The company’s principal businesses are the growing and harvesting of trees; the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products; and real estate construction and development. For seven years, Fortune magazine’s annual corporate reputation survey has ranked Weyerhaeuser number one in social responsibility in the forestry industry.
